In a short story set hundreds of years from now, humanity is locked in a war with an alien species. Now Jake, the sole survivor of the starship Madison, has been captured by the enemy after the brief but vicious battle which led to the destruction of his ship.
He awakens in a prisoner of war camp, and soon realizes what it means to be human, and how to deal with the consequences when your humanity itself is taken away from you.
